Not much of a report, I suppose. Tried to get out for my first trip of the year down at Carolina Beach, launching from Freeman Park (north end).
A combination of Bonnie and the changing tides made it too ugly to try to paddle through the surf, so I launched in the inlet. I figured if I could get across the bar and out toward the sea buoy, it would calm down enough to fish, but the inlet is really shoaled up and everywhere I turned was rough as a cob. I finally bailed, and came inshore to troll a diving plug around the inlet channel, and toss the Gotcha around. It was good exercise, but not much else.
I'd heard the spanish were really coming on strong, but the whole time I was there I barely saw any birds. The big charter boats went out (nothing smaller than 25' even attempted), but I couldn't see where they ended up trolling. Lots of boats fishing the edges for flounder and drum, but I didn't see a single hook-up the whole time I was there.
Weather depending, I'm thinking about making another run this weekend. I'll probably take a couple of cigar minnows along this time to drift... if I can get outside.
Wondering if anyone else has made it out for spanish or kings this season, and if so, how was the luck?
