  • It was a drizzling morning this past Thanksgiving morning but the boy still wanted to go sit in the ground blind we hunt in Davidson County. Shortly before 8 am a doe came by. She busted Hunter moving into position for a shot and disappeared back into the woods. He was miffed for being impatient and I told him to settle down and we'd stay a while longer to see what happens.
Not 10 minutes later here comes the only shooter buck we've seen in the 8 years we've been waiting in the woods together. He was patient this time, moved slow and with stealth. One well placed shot and he bagged his first whitetail buck. It didn't go 50 feet before collapsing in a heap. He still gets a big grin on his face when he thinks about it and so do I. It was Thanksgiving 2 years ago that he bagged his first deer, a big Stokes County doe. I have a feeling we'll for sure be in the woods on Thanksgiving from here on out....

My boy, Hunter, bagged his first buck on Thanksgiving morn. A nice 7 point out of Davidson County. He got his first doe 2 years ago on Thanksgiving. I guess, we need to change Turkey Day to Venison Day at our house.
