Getting to Know Each Other
11pt 160# buck harvested on 11/21/2012 in Saluda County by my son. Est Gross Score 145 3/8.
This buck had been captured on trail cameras two times and was the reason for me spending every daylight hour in the woods. This evening was special as my son was home from college to hunt for the holiday. He and I entered the woods with a plan to get this big deer. Utilizing a decoy and tarsel gland from another buck harvested earlier in the season we setup in the area where I had gotten the trail cam pictures. I was in my ground blind and my son 200 yards away in his. We were setup in some pines along the edge of some really thick cover. About 5:10pm the buck appeared at the edge of the thick cover in front of the decoy. Once he caught the scent of the tarsel gland he ran about 40 yards toward me and stopped still at the edge of the thick cover. I had the rifle steady on him and before I could shoot he started to run out into the open pines between our two blinds. The big deer paused for a second time and again I had a clear shot but could not take it as he was directly between my son and I. The buck then continued to run passing directly 30 yards behind my sons location pausing for the third and final time as he promply shot and successfully harvested the buck. What a Thanksgiving the largest deer we had ever seen while hunting in SC was now going to have a perminant place in our home.
