Just thought I would share this picture with you because I thought it was a beautiful picture! Showed up on my camera back at the beginning of season!
Well guys! Where to start...I got up early and drove to my parents place, snuck in the woods, found my tree, got the climber on and climbed on up. Got all setup and ready to go and somehow managed to knock my bow and my gear pack out of the stand. So back down the tree I went expecting the worst...feeling a little sick and knowing my hunt is over. I get to the bottom and my bow had landed on top of my gear pack and you couldn't even tell it just fell 25 feet out of a tree but I was still worried about the sight getting knocked out but I figured I would climb back up. So up the tree I went for the second time, I get all set up again, bow on my mount, arrow in the knock. Sit down and then remember...'Oh my release is still in my pack' so I get my release out start putting it on my wrist and...well...thump it hits the ground...by now I am like are you freaking kidding me!!! So I do my nest to not get to worked up. I climb down, get my release on my wrist before I leave the ground and climb back up. Get set back up and spray myself dripping with scent a way because I am now sweating like a pig. By now it's also getting pretty light outside. I sit there with the mind set I am wasting my time for a couple hours but at the same time knew I had nothing to lose and well...you can't hunt unless you're in the woods right? About 9:00 A.M I started thinking about climbing down and I looked out in front of me and all I can make out are some large shadows running toward me through thick woods I was hunting. It ended up being a large Doe heard that I had saw last Saturday but wasn't in range of. Well half of the group got up far enough to wind me and headed out to the edge and into the corn field but four of them stuck around about 20 yards to my left. Grabbed my bow, stood up and drew on the largest doe in the group. She would not come out from behind the tree so I had to let mr draw down. Drew again a couple minutes later and put it behind the shoulder and let it fly...the other three ran about 10 yards and stopped and just kept walking around so I knock up my second and last arrow and let it fly on the next largest Doe but missed judgement on the range and missed her just low. They still hung around!! I sat and waited for them to move on then climbed down and drug her out!! So the lesson of the day?? Even when you think you did everything wrong and there is no way a deer is going to come within a square mile of you stick it out cause you never know what the Lord may bless you with!! Also to carry three arrows!! =) Meat in the freezer!!!
Well guys! I hope everyone is having a great year! It's been beautiful winter and Spring is in the air! I wanted to drop in and give you guys a update on my end. I talked about the big 6 I had at about 8 yards and couldn't do anything with my bow last year. Well he's still around and looking as good as he was that morning he stood under me!
Well guys! I had a terrible day in the woods and it only took about 10 minutes lol. I got a late start getting in the woods to start then as I walked in I was jumping deer left and right. I jumped a doe herd. Next I sneak into my stand climb up and as I am turning around to sit down I hear a mess to my right and look and it was the 8 pointer I have been watching all season and passed up at 50 yards two weeks ago. He spooked and ran across a field and into the woods on the other side. So I was feeling good about my stand selection after all the deer I was seeing so I pulled a arrow out of my quiver and guess what? I still had a dang field point on it from when I was shooting target this morning, by now I feel like a complete idiot. Well I sat there for about two more minutes banging my head against the tree and then BOOOM...I heard a shot right from where I just saw my buck run into the woods. I instantly got sick to my stomach and decided I didn't feel like sitting in the tree any more so I climbed down to head over to see if my neighbor shot my buck and he hadn't seen anything but he told me people poach off the back of the property all the time. Hopefully he is still alive and I'll see him again. I did see a bunch of doe walking out of the woods and 1 piebald doe. All in all It was a horrible day and I cant wait till my buck shows back up on camera or I see him again. I'm praying that he shows back up and wasn't victim to a poacher. I can say the positive thing of the day is that I learned from all of it. lol.
Hey guys how old do you think these deer are? One is a Big six who just showed up on camera last night and one is a 8 pointer that has been working a scrape I have on camera.
Hey guys! I set my camera up yesterday on a scrape and last night this guy showed up....It's bordering a soybean field and then there are about 60 yards of woods to a creek bottom to the south then about another 100 yards of woods on the other side of the creek. A opening with a pond to the east about 150 yards also surrounded by woods. I just wanted to get some input on how you guys would hunt this buck? He's not the biggest but hes bigger than anything I have seen.
My fiancé and I just got done carving our pumpkins for the year. I uploaded mine cause I figured you guys would appreciate the work it took.
Well guys and gals I took off on the Honda today and found a scrape line along the woods bordering a 50 acre soybean field. One scrape was rather large and had feces in it. It appears that a large bedding area about the size of a football field is just inside the woods line. I saw several sets of tracks along the edge of the field between the first and last scrape. How have you all handled a good scrape line leading up to the rut? Tell me what's worked! Thanks!!
So I went to my stand Friday morning early before sun up and walking in I got a big whiff of what I thought was maybe a large scrape? Stinky deer urine smell. I looked all over the are after I climbed down later on but couldn't find anything? I was kind of confused. My buck I shot Wednesday dropped about twenty yards from there but there was no smell coming from the area where he dropped. Any thoughts?
Well guys I was able to seal the deal on my first deer in 2011 and only my second deer ever this evening!! I wasn't even planning on going into the woods this evening though I wanted to more than anything but I had my Fiance and grandparents over at the house. My grandpa and I were sitting on the couch watching TV and he said man it's a nice evening...you should be out in the woods. You don't have to tell me twice...I jumped in the shower camoed up and hit the woods. I was a little worried cause I didn't get in to my stand until about 6:10. I was sitting at one of my typical spots (about 15 yards form a big White Oak) Wasn;t seeing much but thought I kept hearing movement crossing the creek, which typically when I hear that they're moving away from me. At about 6:45 I thought I heard something moving in behind me so I took a peek over my shoulder and scanned for movement through the thicket but didn't see anything. When I turned back around I saw what I thought was a small basket eight pointer ( A deer I have not yet seen on camera) coming up from the creek from my right out in front of me. I instantly decided that I was going to try to take him. He acted like he was moving through kind of quickly so as soon as he dropped his head I grabbed my bow, he turned quartering away and started moving away to my left and dropped his head one more time to eat some more acorns. When he did I drew my bow put it right behind his front leg and let it fly. As soon as I released it I got sick to my stomache, I strive on making good clean humane shots and I just knew I made a bad shot. I took the shot sitting down and pushed it to the left and I thought that maybe I even missed right away. He took off and I heard him go about 20-25 yards and crash down and I kept hearing him gasping so I had a good idea that I hit him at this point but was still afraid I just one lunged him or wounded him. I climbed down after he went quiet and went to get my parents to help me drag him out. We headed out to look at 7:30 and my mom caught his belly with the flash light before we even got to my arrow to start tracking him. Yes my shot was misplaced but I thanked the good lord that he guided it to a perfectly placed neck shot and the deer bled out and went down quick. He ended up not having any brow tines and being a 3 by 2 but im still tickled to have yet another decent buck with my bow. second year hunting, only hunting with a bow, second deer ever, and second buck ever. I'm currently two for two lol. Meat and the freezer and knocked off the ole cob webs!!! Im ready to thin me out some does!! Good luck everyone!
So just about every deer I have seen in my woods has a tall rack including the 6 I shot last year as my first deer. I am looking forward to finding the poppa that's producing all these racks because I bet he is cool!
Hey everyone!! IS IT SEPTEMBER YET???????
Well guys. I finally got my deer back from last season. In the picture below my very first Deer with a bow sits to the right of my great Pappy's very first deer with a bow that he took close to 60 years ago. Unfortunately I never got to share the woods with him but he left his love for the outdoors in my blood and I thought it was such a blessing to share the same story as he had 60 years ago.
Hey guys!! It's good to have a season back around so the forums have a little more activity. I have not much of a clue about Turkey hunting but I am going to try this year and yesterday morning I got a call to find out they were in my back yard while I was at work.
How much do they move around? Do they typically roost in the same location and how far do the roam??
I plan on making a run at my first Turkey this year and I plan to do it with my bow!! Soooo...I was wondering what I need to do to get ready for Turkey season. Do you scout them like deer and if so how? I know I have some back on the property I hunt deer because I have seen them but I don't know where to even start as far as preparing for a turkey hunt. Thanks in advance for the advice!
Hey guys!! There is a rare Lunar eclipse happening at 3:00 A.M Tomorrow morning. Hasn't happened in 372 years. What do you guys think?? Tonight and tomorrow...some of the best hunting in 372 years or some of the worst?? I am going out this evening and maybe tomorrow morning.
Hey guys!! I was out sitting in my tree this evening and after freezing and seeing nothing I got down walked out and jumped on my wheeler and headed for the house. I though I would stop by my corn pile on the way and see how its doing and its pretty much completely gone. I just put out a 50 pound bag out late Friday afternoon and it's gone. I am trying to get a idea if everyone else's corn is disappearing this quickly or if maybe someone is messing around with my corn pile because someone has a ladder stand setup about 100 yards up the hill...
Hey guys! I am new to hunting this year so I apologize in advance for the number of questions I may ask!
My situation. Bow hunting thick hardwoods along a creek bed, I have what I believe is the bedding area to my south, they have been killing my corn piles that are about 150 yards to my north and I have seen a good bit of movement when I am out during the day scouting around. I saw 5 just yesterday.(I know scouting during season isn't the best but I have to scout around some since I am just getting started) I scent control my clothing, take my scent bath in the morning, hand scent bombs for extra cover scent. Rattle, Grunt, bleat, snort wheeze, etc. But it seems like when I am sitting in my stand I have 0 movement.
Is there anything you guys can thin that I am missing? Thanks for the help!!!
Hey guys! I just started hunting this season as a avid bow hunter! Had a horrible start with going almost two months without seeing a deer and having a couple interuptions by squirrel hunters and such. Finally found a good piece of private land to hunt!! Last Wednesday November 17th I took down my first deer at twenty five yards through the heart!! I couldn't ask for a better first kill. I grew up in a family that didn't hunt so I am going into it blind and with a bow...which made that kill even sweeter =) Hes a good sized six pointer with two tines broken off. My picture sucks because I eas alone and and to excited to worry about getting a good one. Thanks for looking!
