The will be an IBEF International Bow Hunter Education Course July 19 in West Columbia at the Styx Edcation Room. Free of charge. 8 hr course. THis course is not required in SC generally, but may be needed to bow hunt out of state or out of the country. There are not too many generally taught in SC due to low need. Best to get it under your belt if there is a chance you may need it in the future. Go to DNR website under hunter education and find a bow hunter education course to preregister.
Bowhunting is just for deer and pigs right? The Bowhunters of SC have held an archery bow hunt for bunnies for over 20 years. A small beagle pack is turned out and off we go. This event is strongly oriented toward getting our youth out in the field for their first bow hunting experience and whet their appetite for big game hunting. This event is alway held the first saturday in February. email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for info.
An easy way to find your arrow after the shot,in the late evening, hopefully its sticking in the ground after pass through, or kicked out later, just put a 1/4' piece of reflective tape behind the fletch, you can see you arrow after dark with a light. Did you know an illuminated nock will disqualify a Pope and Young entry? Anything electric on your bow will too, even a mounted camera.
Lemon Island, Cheechesee and Broad rivers, when you come out into the Cheechesee the bank after to cut to the broad seems popular. Don't leave anything interesting visible in your vehicle, we were broken in to on an over night expedition.
Are you hunting with too much weight? A good way to find out is sit in a chair with you bow, pick your feet up off the floor and draw. If you can draw easily, you have a good bow weight. With modern compounds you really don't need over 60lbs anymore, you don't need to stick the arrow deeper in the ground when it blows through an animal. The lighter the pull the more accurate you are.
A peep is just a consistant way to look through the string, if you find a way to look around the string consistantly, you don't need one, some shooters use a light colored serving so the can consistantly see it the same all the time, or use a kisser button.
