  • Well finally had a chance to put a camera up and see what birds were in this particular area I hunt. I had a bunch of birds show up like clock work for several days in a row so hopefully the birds are staying in and around this area. I did throw some corn out so they would all pose for the camera. As usual I had some predator show up as well. I have got to start doing some trapping and hunting for them...Anyway, the the bobcat has a beautiful coat on it and it would make an awesome mount...Anyway, Turkey Season is just around the corner...I hope everyone has luck this year and fills their tags.....

Well I thought I would share a couple recent successful hog hunts since nothing else is really going on.

The first hunt was towards the end of January. We had a pretty good snowfall and I wanted to get out and do some scouting. Well after walking what seemed like 5 miles I came to the back field of the property I was scouting. I noticed a group of hogs making there way out into the cut corn field. It had not been cut in yet. I used a hedge row to sneak withing a 100 yards or so. There wound up being 8-10 pigs in the group but due to the bottom they were in I could not see them from my location. I picked out the biggest sow and dropped with one shot from the 300 win mag. As soon as I shot I walked around the end of the hedge row and could see more pigs pretty much running in circles. There was a BIG board in the group and I definitely put 2 possibly 3 rounds in him and somehow He manage to get away all the while dragging his back half..HE was a BEAST!! He would have been my first 'trophy' boar. I would get another chance in a couple weeks...The little fellow in the pic decided to wait a little to long to run for cover. Somehow I rolled his little butt at about 120 yards...Go figure. We didn't recover the board but we did have meat for sausage which has been delicious.

My next chance at a good boar would come a couple weeks later on a hunt with my Pops. This hunt was a little more planned and thought out lol. We have a spot we have hunted pigs from the last couple years. We have a Sniper Hawg Light ( setup there as well as a feeder. It is not a battery operated feeder though. Anyway my Pops has a camera setup there and has kept it baited some since deer season went out. With that being said we had been getting pics of a good group of hogs and one just so happen to be a great boar with a beautiful coat on him. I knew I would get a chance at him if we played the wind right. The only thing is there were coming in between 1 am - 3 am. Our plan was to get setup about 11:30 and sit and wait....oh and sleep until we heard the stampede coming through the cut over lol..Well it didn't quite work out that way....That Friday was one of the warmest days of the year so far. My Pops said they will be in early and sure enough when we walked in at 11:45 they were already on the bait. We managed to sneak to about 40 yards from them to our double millennium stand. We both had our guns and could have shot from the ground but it was hard to tell which was which because of they running around. We could have unleashed the fury on the group but I really wanted that boar. As my Pops tried to make his way up the stand they spook and ran over into cut over about 50 yards. We got up in the stand and got settled. Meanwhile we could here the pigs roaming around, splashing and fighting with each other. After about 30-40 minutes they made their way back to the bait and low and behold the first pig out was the boar. I was waiting till the group came back so we could both shoot at the same time. We were going to try the 123 shoot method with me calling the numbers so you can imagine how well that worked lol. Anyway, we knew this big boar was king because he growled at everything even if He was by himself or surrounded with pigs. When He came in to feed everything moved got out of his way. He would get a mouthful and leave and come back and do the same thing over and over so we had to wait for the right time to shoot. Eventually the stars lined up and we had our opportunity. I was using night vision and my Dad was using a red dot. When it came time to shoot I called out the numbers and with one shot from the DPMS 223 placed just below and in front of the ear, my first trophy boar was on the ground. My Dad missed a huge sow mostly because of where she was at and me not calling out the sequence correctly lol..However we were both so excited to have that big boy on the ground. He weighed 300lbs on the dot. I have got him at the taxidermy right now for a shoulder mount...It will be one of those hunts I never forget.....

Here are a few of my latest pics....The groups are definitely busting up and moving on....Hopefully one or two will stick around.....

Oh Boy Oh Boy!!! The time is drawing near.....I am getting super excited....Multiple shooters in this group...Hopefully all of them want go to far.....

    Hey Guys,

I am trying to find out about the best archery shops within say 50 miles of Raleigh. I am planning on purchasing a new bow soon and would like to visit a place with some variety. I currently shoot a Hoyt but I have shot plenty of bows from other brands (Mathews, Bowtech, Bear, Elite, Diamond, etc) that were great so I am not very picky. I figured the best way to find out where to go or not to go is to ask the people that may go there regularly. Any info would be greatly appreciated........

Here are a few of the good pics I have gotten so far this year...Two nice bucks and a handful of other up and comers...One of them is my friend cactus which should be easy to find lol...I just love trail cams.....

    October 24, 2012 at 2:25pm

Well a lot of people don't like to admit to missing but I know it is a part of hunting that everybody experiences at some point. Well, yesterday I did just that on a nice doe. It would have been my longest shot, 48 yards, if I would have connected. I shot right where I was aiming but I anticipated 8-10' drop being is was dead still and quiet. Needless to say she did not read my script and had other plans lol....There was 2 does and a young buck out in the field. There was something else in the edge of the woods that they kept looking at and I could here but whatever it was never stepped out. I decided b4 it got to dark to try her. Anyway, they are really hammering the beans around here so I know I will get another crack at her. I am going to try and post the video. The shot is around the 2:15 mark....Thanks goodness for lighted nocks...I would have never found the arrow if it wasn't for them....

    September 14, 2012 at 2:01pm

Well I guess I need to tell you guys about my 1st evening hunt yesterday....I hate to b/c I want to punch myself every time I tell it to some one lol....

So, I go to a brand new spot that I just hung a Muddy stand last Monday...Well sometime this week they picked the corn so I new I needed to get over there....I have not had a trail camera over there. I just based my stand location on tracks and other sign. I was sitting on the inside edge of a secluded field. Well after walking about 400-500 yards from Jeep I realized I forgot my camera mount at home and my bow hanger at my jeep. I just said oh well since I was already at my stand. I climb up and after awhile a few turkeys come out which was very surprising in this area. About 7:15 the deer start pouring out of the woods on the opposite end of the field about 130-140 yards away...There were 3-4 little bucks and a dozen or more does. So I stand up to take my first video and get some footage of the first group that came out(Probably 6-7 deer). After a few more minutes I noticed a few more had made it out. This whole time they are all feeding my way.... So I decide to stand up and get some more video. Well, since I forgot my bow hanger I propped my bow on the seat cushion and the tree. However I did not notice that my safety harness rope was behind my bow. I am getting ready to start recording again when I untangle my safety rope from behind my head....Can You Guess What Happened Next?????? Yep, my bow plummets to the ground thru briars and all. Of course all the deer look my way b/c they were only about 90-100 yards now. About 3 seconds later the field clears and of course bringing up the rear was the first shooter buck I have seen while hunting in 2 seasons!! At that point I just wanted to jump out of the stand but I sat down and calmed down....Used some choice words about myself and then climbed down to check on my bow. Thankfully my bow was fine so with about another 20 min of shooting light left I started the walk out. As I came around the corner from the back field I noticed a deer standing about 50-60 away from my Jeep....Guess what??? Another shooter buck...Unreal...2 shooters in one evening...I rarely see this kind of action much less a mature buck. All in all it was a great hunt even though I blew it. At least I know there are plenty of deer around this farm and at least 2 shooters....I went today and hung another set on the other side of the field so I definitely will be more prepared next time....You live and you learn so don't forget your bow hanger or camera arm lol......

Got a couple neat pics this week...We have never seen a bear at this particular spot so needless to say we were a little shocked to see it...Not a huge one but a bear none the less.....

We also got a pic of two young bobcats playing or fighting(not sure which one) I wish it would have been a little bit later b/c it is kinda hard to see...but one of them is airborne lol....Neat photos either way...

And yes the year and time are wrong....

    August 27, 2012 at 3:35pm

Nothing to brag about in this pic but one of the bucks is quite unusual. I believe we are going to call him 'Cactus' lol....He is the 2nd one from the right...I think that name fits him pretty good b/c the very first thing I thought of when I saw him was desert cactus lol....

    August 20, 2012 at 3:21pm

Just read where opening day of Dove season this year will open 30 min before sunrise on opening day! That will mess up our usual ritual of getting everybody together for a cookout in the field before going out to our spots for the afternoon hunt!! LOL....I do enjoy that but it will be nice to eat a biscuit and hunt that morning and then go to the beach before it gets to be 100...I enjoy shooting doves but sitting out in the open when it is 100 degrees for 3-4 hours kinda sucks lol....Anybody else up here have in opening day rituals???

    August 03, 2012 at 7:43am

Well my vacation is set to start this evening at 5 oclock sharp. I am heading to Atlanta in the morning with my wife and another couple that we have been friends with for years. We are going to a Braves game which I am super excited about. Not excited about it being 101 degrees though lol. We are staying the weekend so hopefully we can find something in the AC to do lol... Anyway Sunday when we get back we are headed to Topsail Island for 7 days of rest and relaxation. That of course means a lot of fishing, gigging, possibly golfing, enjoying frosty beverages, and playing on the beach with the fam...I am so excited b/c they are catching are sorts of good stuff down there lol. Unfortunately NCS forums will not let me and my android make post to the site but I still will be checking in to see how everybody is doing...Anyway just thought I would say peace out before I went flat lined for 10-11 days lol....

    June 28, 2012 at 10:04am

Well here is our new tower stand...Well mostly my Dad's but He wanted to get something nice and cozy for the grand kids as they approach hunting age. Most of the time we build our own but we just do not have the time for it right now so He broke down and got this one. I am 6'2' with a 31' draw and I can fully draw inside without touching anything or my bow out the window so it is plenty big. It has a 5' thick layer of Insulation around the outside so it will keep us plenty warm on the cold days and not to hot on the warm days. It is 10 ft. to the base as well. I am looking forward to trying it out this fall!!

    June 21, 2012 at 1:21pm

Gotta Represent my passion lol....Got this done last week...Pretty cool decal if I may say so myself....

    June 20, 2012 at 2:54pm

Well this past weekend we spent our second weekend in our new home away from home on South Topsail Island. We had a great time even though I did not get to do any fishing. It was just to rough to fish where I was at. I did manage to take my son Cam fishing on Sunday in the ICW. We were using shrimp and fishing off a good friend dock. I took him there b/c the pin fish will wear out the shrimp. We caught a couple dozen pin fish in about 30-40 min and then proceeded to play in the water. Overall, it was a good weekend spent with family and friends. Did a little fishing, played on the beach, played golf, and of course ate some great food. I am ready to get back down there for sure and get after some fish!!

Well I can finally post a successful turkey post lol....I was blessed Monday evening with a chance at redemption after 2 failed turkey hunts....My other two hunts where blown by none other than ME!! My man GT will always tell you that patience has killed more birds than anything. Well I am a firm believer of being patient and being that I am an avid bowhunter, I learned to be extremely patient. Well on Friday April 20th I guess I woke up and left my patience out the house because I had zero that morning. I had been watching some nice birds at this particular spot that I decided to set up on. I went in early that morning set up my blind and placed my decoys...Low and behold the birds went to gobblin their heads off no further than 60-70 yards away....except on the opposite side from where I had been seeing them. I am still farely confident I will get a shot so I sit there patiently waiting.....j/k remember I left the patience at home. Anyway they fly down and start walking through the gate about 65 yards and into the open field. First came 3 hens and then 3 jakes....I said I know there has got to be toms and sure enough 2 big boys come strutting thru the gate. A little time goes by and the jakes and hens have passed my decoy setup at about 30 yards and moved down the field edge. However the toms seem to moving away from the rest of the group. That is when panic set in and 1000 things went thru my head...They were standing in a little bottom and I guessed them to be around 50 yards....Instead of waiting for them to meet back up with the group I decided to fire at one....I was so anxious to kill a bird I just couldn't stand it...All my buddies were killing birds and I wanted to get in on the action. I said 50 yards..I got them. Boy I was wrong. After watching them fly off into the distance unscathed I sat there asking myself why oh why did did I even attempt that shot...I thought 'What an Idiot'..Not that I was not capable of making it but why...I had watched them same birds do the same thing 3 or 4 mornings. Granted they roosted in a different spot but same general area and they always traveled this particular bottom in the field. Everything that I have practiced, learned, and experienced the last few years totally left my mind b/c of being so anxious to get a bird. So I pack my stuff up and I am so disgusted with myself I decided to call it a day. I walked to where they were standing and it was about 65 yards from my blind. I was way off. I would have never taken that shot but anyway... As I am walking back to my jeep I decided to check out another spot that the birds like to hang out. I crawled for about 50 yards on my belly to get to the edge of the field where the bird was at. It was one tom and one hen and in another act of desperation I fired off another shot at a bird that was probably 50 yards away only to see a few chest feather fly along with him for several hundred yards. Then HE hit the ground running. Needless to say I didn't find him and I went home.

Well this past Saturday I am back at the same spot and set up in the right place this time. The birds sound off in the same spot so I am getting excited....Well that didn't last long because they all flew into the middle of the 50 field and proceeded to walk straight away from me. I hadn't called or anything but I knows they saw the decoys. Anyway, I had to work so my hunt was over pretty quick.

Anyway on Monday the 30th after taking my wife to the Doctor I decided to try and get in b/w them on the way to the roost since I know where it is at. Needless to say I got a chance at redemption on a nice 2 year old tom...I left the big one in the field with hens....He will hope give me a shot with the bow but we will see. I watched this bird come from 300-400 yards on a b line. The only call I used was the proven 'Spursuader'. I was flooded with emotion after the shot b/c the the events that had taken place prior to that. I just felt so blessed to have another opportunity at a great bird. This time I was patient and it paid off for me big time!!

    May 01, 2012 at 3:57pm

Tagged this nice Tom only using the trusted 'Spursuader' made by one of our own.....

    May 01, 2012 at 1:59pm

Knocked this Tom down at 7:20 p.m. on April 30th...

    May 01, 2012 at 1:57pm

So this morning before I go to work I was dropping my son off. Down the road about 300 yards it looked like there was a barrell in the middle of the road. My curiosity kicked in so I had to investigate. As I got closer it started to move but I thought the wind might just be blowing it across the road. Well I was wrong....I got about 100 yards away before I realized it was a Big Ol'e Tom strutting his stuff for the ladies on the other side of the road. I snapped a pic of him on the shoulder and then of him in the field. I have seen them cross before but I have never seen one dead still strutting back and forth in the road... Of course I went to run him off so He didn't end up in a windshield like some other birds have recently. Anyway I just thought it was pretty funny and I hope He sticks around till next week because he is a goodun!!

I have been a fan of Midwest Whitetail since they start their semi-live show back in 2008. Bill Winke is a great host and I have learned a lot of the site and the properties site. Anyway, this year they started a new series call Spring Thunder. They have prostaff, mostly regular joe's like you and me, that hunt in their states including NC. Anyway last week's episode I thought was great. Their is a lot of action with some really good footage. From reverse camera angles to awesome audio this one has it all. I think the 3rd or 4th hunt, the first birds that come out are a group of hens. If you have ever wanted to here fighting purrs and clucks then this is the video for ya...Make sure you have the volume turned up. It is awesome!!! Gets me even more excited about opening day.....
