sorry i didnt respond i have been out of country for the last week. You can find birds in there, but like everywhere else, walk walk walk, then walk some more up on the mountain till you can find a bird. I tend to hunt places backwards. I walk in as far as i can get where the woods still look good, then work my way back down during the morning slipping and calling. On a lot of game lands I have killed birds at 10am or later just slipping along way up on the mountain till I hear scratching, then set up and call soft. birds will come in without gobbling a lot of the time.
NCbowhunter, if you are hunting out of the morganton/valdese area you should be up in upper creek, or way low on the lower portion of the table rock road right above the private.
Far off the road in both places. Most birds in these areas are so far from the road around ridges that you wont ever hear them until you get way back in the mountain. I killed my first bird up on the table rock road like 14 years ago, and I have killed a few in there since then.
You can hunt the chesnut mtn section off of upper creek road long walk to get to turkeys, but you shouldnt have much company. you can also go in across from the chesnut mtn gate and walk about 2 miles calling off into the left side of the road. there was lots of turkey sign in there last time i came through
or go in off 181 at the bark house about half a mile and owl hoot in the morning, beat feet to get closer to the birds and set up down on upper creek in the flats. once you kill, you can cut the main trail, take a right, and pop back out on 181 at the greentown trail right above BM overlook. from there you will have about a mile walk to get back up to the car.
Hope this helps you next season.
Good luck deer hunting
