Another guide, Bob Green, recently showed me the techniques for catching trophy winter smallmouth on Lake James. I've been up there several times in Jan-early Feb and though the bite has been a little sporadic on the days I've been there, the bigguns are certainly there to be caught. The technique is fairly simple & correlates to striper fishing with downrods. Med. size shiners fished 28-35' deep in 25-50ft water work fine. Fish On!
