  • Topwater Action on Lake Hartwell

With the long, hot days of summertime upon us, the topwater action has heated up for Lake Hartwell bass anglers.

When most anglers are on the water at sunup and wondering where the fish are, the bite starts at mid-morning on long, gravel points. The schooling fish are moving on these points and gorging themselves on the bait, blueback herring.

The topwater lure of choice is a Zara Super Spook in chrome. Start “walking-the-dog” in 20, 15, and 10 feet of water over these tapering points. If the bass only follow the bait and do not hit, speed up the retrieve.

Other good lures to use on the points are an Alabama rig, a white fluke, and a chrome Sebile Magic Swimmer. If the topwater bite starts to slow down, try a dropshot rig with a finesse or Robo worm in green, green pumpkin, or morning dawn on the point drop offs.

Generally the fish are in the two – three pound class, but occasionally a “good ‘un” will come up and hit. Get on the Lake Hartwell topwater bass action while it is hot.
