A friend of mine and I went Turkey hunting in Bertie county on 4/17/2012.He and I began hearing the turkey gobble around 7 am, we set up beside a road, right before a bottom that turkeys use to cross. we set up set up a jake and a hen decoy right up from the bottom on the road. the turkey gobbled for about 30 minutes and left the area and went to a field several hundred yards from where i was located. Craig left to check the field out around 7:15 and saw 2 mature birds, and 3 jakes and 3 hens in the field. Craig saw one of the birds chase(my bird)back into the the woods.I began hearing the gobbler, gobbling around 8:30 or so and knew he was coming back for the decoys. He crossed in the bottom and came up the road. I shot my first turkey around 8:45 that morning, it was so awesome. I didn't call the bird at all once I started hearing him gobble again, which proofed to not make him more alert. I took him to Eddie Harrells Auto and sports in Ahoskie, NC and had him scored. The bird weighted 20lbs 7 ounces, his 2 beards were 11 1/2 inches and 10 9/16 inches and his spurs were 1.5 inches each. He scored 94.562. The guy at eddie Harrells said i would never another bird this big again in my life, only time will tell!!! I had such and awesome time and look forward to turkey hunting more often. I want to give a special Thanks to my good friend Craig who took me turkey hunting!
