  • Lake Moultrie Striper Fishing

The striper fishery on Lake Moultrie is in great shape according to SCDNR fisheries biologist Scott Lamprect. Joined by Lamprecht and outdoor writer (and biologist) Jeff Burleson, we fished with guide Kevin Davis of Black's Camp this past weekend with a cold wind blowing and a pretty good chop on the water.

The tough weather didn't deter Davis from finding some fish for us to tussle with. Once Davis was satisfied we were in striper territory, he tossed out two drift socks to slow our drift across the lake.

With 6 fishing rods loaded with live bait on Carolina rigs, it wasn't long before we got into some fish, boating about a dozen in an hour. It also wasn't long before the weather turned less favorable and we decided to head back to Black's Camp for a hot meal.

It was interesting fishing with Lamprecht, who has devoted the past 15 years or so of his career to improving the striped bass stock in the Santee Cooper Lakes. Like all anglers, he enjoyed the tug on the line each time he hooked a striper, but he seemed most thrilled talking about how the efforts of his staff have payed off, along with the striper regulations that have been in effect for the past few years. Bumping the minimum size limit up to 26 inches has helped a lot, but according to Lamprecht, it's the closed season during the summer months that have led to the biggest improvement. A 90% mortality rate of fish released during those hot days was taking its toll on the lake.

On the boat ride back to Black's Camp, Lamprecht said he's never been so optimistic about the health of the striper fishery in Lake Moultrie as he is now. And that's a great thing for anglers.

If you wish to catch some stripers, catfish, crappie, largemouth, or bream, give the folks at Black's Camp a call at 843-753-2231 ( Deer hunting and quail hunting are also available through Black's Camp, as well as lodging and a full service restaurant.
