New To Sportsman Network?
  • New to the area

New to the Wilmington area and getting ready for opening day. I don't belong to a club (yet). I have not hunted Eastern NC ever. I have done a little scouting of the Green Swamp and Juniper Creek game lands.

Are these areas pressured with hunter?

Anyone have any bow hunting experince with these areas?

Any generic advise for someone new to this part of the state?
    Bear, bear and more bear
I never hunted it but I know they have a lot of bear. I think it is heavily hunted but stay tuned to other comments that may have some first hand knowledge!
This early in the season down there in the eastern region I can tell one thing of advise. Hunt water sources close to food sources but not on the food but on the water source. This time of year you'll get more action on the water source than food in the daylight hours. I've used this down there to put several nice bucks on the ground and my friends as well.
Unless you hunt with dogs or have a group of buddies that do your wasting your time. And yes both of those areas are very pressured. There will be groups of guys lined up on there dog boxes every saturday...Even during bow and blackpowder your wasting your time. The dog hunters have been runnning there dogs out there every chance they get for the paste month or so.
    Thanks for the feedback
Thank You for the feedback so quickly.

I knew that they run dogs in that area. I haven't seen any evidence of dogs in the areas I've been scouting. Have seen evidence of bears and deer though. Real fresh sign after rain and huricane.

I am a still hunter and have experience with hunting alongside dog hunters down in Charleston. They can dampen a hut but they can also present opportunities. I'm a glass half full kind of guy. Any day in the deer woods is a better day than not.

We will see what opening day is like.
    game lands
It will be good till Oct. 15 then you can hang it up. Look at the Columbus county game lands maps and the one that runs down the Wacamaw River is normally not that busy. I know it has bear, deer, and hogs on it and no dogs. Its a easy drive down hwy 17 all you have to do is make 2 turns.
