  • Screaming War Bird Wins Grand American

The 2011 Grand American Coon Hunt came to a close early Sunday Morning, and Screaming War Bird, a female treeing walker from Indian Trail, NC was crowned as overall champion.

The 3-year old is owned by Garrett Shearin and Josh Griffin, and the team placed 8th overall in last year's competition.

Tennessee's Randy Steadman and Bowman, SC's Sam Drain took 2nd place with Ironman's Crank. Drain also owns Drain's Little Jake who took 3rd.

The final hunt was postponed until 4:30 a.m. when Drain pointed out he owns the land that had been designated as the last hunting spot. So the hunt was moved to the town of North.

This was the 46th Grand American, a yearly event at the Orangeburg fairgrounds. 402 dogs competed this year in various classes, and over 30,000 folks stopped by to see the competitions, the dogs, and dozens of vendors selling everything from ATVs and hunting clothing to coon hounds.
