  • Shaw Kids Fishing Tournament

I must start by saying its been awhile since my last post, but not because I haven't been doing any fishing, but because I've been doing too much fishing.

I just recently returned from Louisiana, after participating in the IFA Lafitte tournament, which could have been better for us, but won't complain. We wound up picking up some crucial points for team of the year, and that much closer to participating in the championship at the end of the year.

However, as I was driving home, my teamate was participating in the southeasts largest fishing tournament, the CCA Redfish Shootout, exceeding more than a 100 boats, and wound up finishing second, collecting a check and getting some always wanted exposure. Congrats Brandon!

Now to the heart of my post, taking kids fishing. This is the first time I've ever assisted with a kids event, and I will say I will do it again in a heartbeat. We had 52 children, from ages 3 to 13 participating, and everyone, including the parents came out winners. I met a father son team who mentioned that this is their first time ever fishing together, and I couldn't tell you who was more excited. I also met some stellar female anglers who kept coming up to me every 10 minutes, asking me to weigh these beautiful bluegill they caught. I also met two young men, 3 and 7, who shared this day with both their mom and dad, who just recently returned from deployment, and caught some beatiful catfish, and wound up taking 1st place in the youth division. All in all it was a great day, and I have to give credit to my sponsors, especially Vicious Fishing and Castaway Rods, who donated to the event. Every kid, whether they caught a fish or not walked away a winner....grab bags full of gear, door prizes for almost everyone, and some great stuff, icluding hats, line, stickers, you name it for the winners.

I always remembered the first perch I caught fishing with my dad, and how much it fueled my passion for the sport. However the more important thing was how it brought us closer together, and how this day may be remember by those kids for the rest of their lives.

So next time you can assist, or one of your children wants to go fishing don't hesitate to go, you may surprised at who had a better time.

    Tight Lines and God Bless!
